The Golf GTI Championship at Brands Hatch

Motorsport, it’s a funny old game. Much like football, while the top series are full of money and big names the lower leagues often have more thrilling and exciting matches. Much the same can be said of motorsport. While your F1 and British Touring Car Championship are fast and glamour filled you often find more thrills and spills in the lower championships. The best of which, for pure spectator enjoyment, is often the one make series like the Clio Cup and the Saxmax Saxo Championship. This brings me neatly onto the Toyo Tires Golf GTI Championship 2009.

As a great demonstration of Volkswagen’s legendary durability, a 56-year old Transporter van has just achieved a top speed of 102.84 mph and done the quarter mile sprint at the Santa Pod racetrack in a time of 12.65 seconds.

There are some shows where it’s all about the chrome, the engineering, the paint and the overall look. Then there are shows were this almost becomes secondary to the chilled out atmosphere and fair like vibe.

Stanford Hall annual meeting now in it's 33rd year has been held on May Bank Holiday since 1976 and is considered the mecca for concours VW's. The show venue is pretty spectacular, being set in the large Stanford Hall stately home grounds surrounded by countryside.

LOKI, god of destruction

After being in the Volkswagen 'scene' for 18 years you find yourself moulded by certain trends as it were and i can unforgivingly be quite biased sometimes. Shows and meets start to get somewhat boring and everyone seems to follow the same styles which isn't wrong its just safe. But i see the Volkswagen scene starting to become stuck inside its own rut.

Many moons ago it was every young red-blooded lad’s dream to own a bad-ass Mk1, the kind of wheels the younger lads looked up to and the older lads remembered fondly. I’m sure whatever shape or model your into right now you will have felt the old school bug bite at some point, so you know where I’m coming from.

Unique is a strong word these days. Whether you’re out on your own riding the waves of creativity or simply doing something nobody else has just for the hell of it, there are plenty of ways to be unique. Being unique isn’t necessarily a good thing. Take Mike Tyson’s facial tattoo for example, undoubtedly unique but would you want one? No. Would you tell him that? Again, no.

Why and when did you purchase this car? I purchased the car in October of 2004. I was looking for a GTI and stumbled across the 20 th anniversary edition which looked like a good package. I ended up driving approximately 1700 miles roundtrip, from Tampa, Florida to Richmond, Virginia to make the purchase.
